Your Personal Dream Oasis Awaits You
|
No, we may not be able to escape to exotic locations at the moment, but we CAN indulge in creating a beautiful space to escape to. Instead of thinking of your bedroom as just the place where you lay your head at night, transform it into a luxurious heaven with these simple tips, and be inspired on the ‘how to’ by some of our favourite stylists ...
YOUR PERSONAL DREAM OASIS AWAITS!
An obvious place to start (I hear you say) ... the bed is the centrepiece of your bedroom and the primary surface area available to create a soothing, inviting vibe that will emanate every time you walk into your room. A beautiful headboard upholstered in a luscious fabric offers a stylish backdrop and added comfort for sitting up in bed. A comfortable mattress and pillows are also a must.

More than any other room, decorating a bedroom is a chance to really reflect your personal style and create a look you absolutely love. Whether you dream of neutral nirvana, a resort oasis or a luxurious hotel-style suite, be inspired to indulge in the pieces, colours and patterns that bring your space to life and make your heart sing.

We’ve heard it all before, but ‘Oasis Styling 101’ clearly states that indulgent layering of texture, pattern and colour is imperative. This can be achieved not only through the obvious soft furnishings ... cushions, bedlinens and throws ... but also through a mix of surfaces, shapes and textures which combine to create beautiful synergy that, when done well, helps to elevate your mood. Whether you’re a minimalist or a colour and pattern enthusiast, the bedroom is the place to let your passions run wild.

A perfect example of layering with both soft and hard surfaces, this beautiful bedroom, styled by Interior Motives, enjoys a neutral colour palette with great depth of character. A sense of warmth and luxury has been created by layering of subtle earth inspired tones and textures. Lines from the moody timber panelling are cleverly reflected in the nickel clad ‘Finch’ bedside table while the natural slub texture of the linen bedhead beautifully offsets the gentle shimmer of the silky bedspread.

While it’s sensible to invest in neutral tones for big ticket items, bringing in colour through your cushions, accessories or art allows for greater flexibility and a chance to indulge your senses without breaking the bank. If you’re anything like me and get excited by colour and pattern, try layering a mix of plump feather filled cushions in lusty tones and textures on your bed - a written invitation to relax!

Styled by Tina Nettlefold, luscious terracotta and toffee tones inject alluring warmth into this otherwise neutral bedroom. A secret weapon in the designer toolkit, colour has been proven to affect mood and can completely change the feel of a space. Generally speaking, warm colours including red, orange and yellow in all their variations are energizing, passionate, and positive while cooler colours like green, blue and purple, are often more subdued. They are the colours of night, of water, of nature, and are usually calming, relaxing, and somewhat reserved. The use of rich warm tones and tactile finishes can create a sense of comfort during the cooler months while cooler tones and crisp white linen help create a fresh summer vibe. When you need a change, just swap these smaller items out to completely refresh your space...

We all start off with good intentions, but let’s face it - life often gets in the way. It takes firm planning, and regular ‘tidying’ to be able to maintain a beautiful bedroom. Give yourself a chance to succeed by ensuring you have plenty of storage. For those (like me) who don’t have the luxury of a spacious walk-in-robe, furniture pieces that look fabulous while also providing additional storage are a God send.

BEDSIDE TABLES & CHESTS

It’s not only about getting high-quality furniture; it is also about getting the things you need and placing them where it makes sense. For example, a beautifully made chest of drawers makes perfect sense for the bedroom. It is not only functional, but also an opportunity to add some glamour and solidify your favourite design style. Atop with a mirror or favourite piece of art, a beautiful chest of drawers offers space for creating a vignette of your favourite things, ensuring your bedroom feels unique and personal.

GET CREATIVE
What works for you? There’s no need to be limited to chests and bedsides for bedroom storage - buffets are also a great option for bedrooms offering a streamlined look perfect for housing folded clothes, books or other personal items. Styled with a mirror, this can offer the perfect place for applying makeup if you don’t have an en-suite or suitable natural lighting in your bathroom.

Whatever your style, get rid of items and furniture that doesn’t serve you so that you can open up your room for elements that will transform the space into your true dream bedroom ...you won’t regret it!

To create a truly dreamy bedroom oasis, it’s important to create atmosphere. Offering a focused light source for bed time reading, or a gentle, relaxing glow for relaxing, lighting plays an essential role in creating atmosphere. Whether it’s a bedside table lamp, bedside pendant or strategically positioned chandelier, lighting offers another opportunity for expressing your individual style.
THE FIVE SENSES

Ok, so now that your bedroom looks incredible, and is filled with layers of tactile surfaces that feel luxurious, it’s time to think about the sense of smell. Collect those dirty socks off the floor and replace their delightful aroma with your favourite scent. Whether you prefer essential oils, or lighting your favourite candle, an appropriate fragrance or combining of scents can manipulate the atmosphere. Just like the right song, scents have the power to change a mood.
Fruity flavours are great for body refreshment and a quick uplifting of energy - they nicely match with vivid tones and a lively atmosphere. Woody notes, the scents of the forest and fresh leaves, as well as the delicate aromas of the ocean and mountain air, create the illusion of open space. They are ideal for autumn and winter days, when closed windows, as well as a lack of fresh air and natural light may make us feel flat. Perfect for chill out nights, some herbal scents have a strong healing effect, while the scents of leather, tobacco and champagne will give a subtle touch of luxury to your space.

Now all that’s left to do is pour yourself a nice cup of tea (or something a bit stronger) and steal yourself away with a good book or favourite playlist as your relax into your cushy bedroom chair. With all your senses indulged, the scene is set for total serenity.
